Seasonal flu is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by a virus (lungs and upper airways). Coughing or sneezing by viral carriers might spread the virus to others. Aches and pains, a high fever, a loss of appetite, nausea, a dry cough, and other symptoms are all possible. Visit our Health Conditions section for more information about the flu.

Flu can be deadly in some situations, especially for those in ‘At Risk Groups,’ who are more susceptible to complications including bronchitis, pneumonia, and infections.

Vaccination against the flu is strongly recommended for ‘At Risk Groups.’ They are defined as individuals who:

Aged 65+
Persons with Down syndrome
Those with a long-term medical condition such as diabetes or heart or lung disease
People whose immune system is impaired due to disease or treatment
Cancer patients
Persons with a body mass index (BMI) over 40
Pregnant women
Residents of nursing homes and other long stay institutions
Healthcare workers
Carers
People with regular close contact with poultry, waterfowl or pigs

If you are considered part of one or more of the ‘At Risk Groups’, and have a Medical Card, Doctor Visit Card or HAA Card, you may be entitled to a FREE Flu vaccination. Visit or contact us to find out if you are eligible.

Seasonal flu vaccine helps the person’s immune system to produce antibodies to the flu virus.

Seasonal flu vaccines have been given for more than 60 years to millions of people worldwide. Reactions are generally mild and serious side effects are rare. Our pharmacists will assess you before administering the flu vaccine to see if it is suitable for you. We do encourage you to stay in the pharmacy for 15 minutes after the vaccine is administered in case you have any side effects.

With your permission we will inform your doctor that you have been vaccinated so that they can update your medical records. This is important as the vaccine should not be duplicated.
