Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception is available from your pharmacist without a prescription, provided you meet the necessary criteria. It is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy if your regular contraception fails or if no contraception was used.

Emergency contraception works best the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex. It can be effective up to 120 hours (5 days) afterwards, but its effectiveness decreases over time.

At Murrays Ballsbridge Pharmacy, contraception services are available free of charge for medical card holders and individuals aged 17–35 years. To access this service, you will need to provide your PPS number and proof of date of birth.

For patients outside this age range or without a medical card, a fee will apply. For more information, speak to your local pharmacist — we’re here to guide you through your options.
